The Jolly Sailor was one of those pubs that opened early. This was just as well considering the fact there were punters standing outside from 9.30 a.m. onwards. As soon as the doors opened at ten, a group of five men, plus Jordan Whittington, went inside.

When the young officer had left home earlier his grandfather, Bert, had wondered why he looked such a state. His hair uncombed, wearing his oldest jeans, a raincoat that Bert recognised as one of his own and a pair of trainers slated to be taken to a charity shop, he looked as if he might accost passers-by for some loose change. But Bert knew better than to ask and so Jordan had left home without attracting comment.

He went up to the bar and ordered a pint of cider. Not some poncy Belgian brew in a bottle, but a pint of the bog-standard cheap cider alcoholics frequently resorted to when they were down on their luck. He flung some coins on the scarred counter and then sloped off to the ‘beer garden’ round the back – a soggy patio featuring wet garden furniture – to join the other men. All the other punters smoked. Jordan could take it or leave it, but he’d come armed with a small packet of tobacco and some Rizlas and so he set about making a roll-up.
